Union Coffee alternatives come up more often than you would think. A customer emailed us last spring, four years into drinking Union. She wanted a change, and nothing had gone wrong.
We sent her five names. This article is the longer version of that reply. These are the five we would still send today.
None of these roasters is better than Union across the board. Instead, each one is better at a single specific thing. Therefore, treat this as a map rather than a league table.

Union is one of the roasteries I have brewed most over those years. Therefore, it is worth being clear about what it actually is.
What Is Union Coffee?
Union Hand-Roasted Coffee is a speciality roastery in East London. It launched in 2001 as Union Coffee Roasters and took its current name in 2007. Jeremy Torz and Steven Macatonia founded it after leaving the Seattle Coffee Company.
Union hand-roasts to order, waiting for your order before firing the roaster. It runs a modern Loring alongside a 50-year-old Probat.
Its sourcing model is Union Direct Trade, and it names the cooperatives behind each coffee. Union is also a certified B Corp.
Revelation is its flagship espresso blend, sitting alongside House Roast. A 200g bag costs £7.95, and a 1kg bag costs £32.95.
Union publishes Revelation as chocolate and treacle with a caramel finish.
Every bag ships as wholebean, cafetière, filter or espresso grind.
Union publishes an SCA Quality Score on Revelation, which is listed at 84.5. That score measures cup quality on a tasting scale.
Those are the facts of the place. So the question is why anyone goes looking at Union Coffee alternatives at all.
Why Look for a Union Coffee Alternative?
Most people searching for a Union Coffee alternative are not leaving a problem behind. Instead, they want something specific that a different roaster happens to do.
Here are the three reasons that come up most.
Published purity testing. Some buyers want a lab certificate they can open and read. However, Union shows an SCA Quality Score, which rates taste rather than what else is in the bag. That gap is where most people start looking elsewhere.
Union publishes no mycotoxin, pesticide or heavy-metal screen on its site. Therefore that tells you nothing about the bag, in either direction.

One thing is worth saying before the list starts. Union costs £3.98 per 100g, or roughly 72p a cup. Two of the four alternatives below match that almost exactly.
The other two cost more, so nothing here undercuts Union at the standard bag size. So the reasons to move are the cup, the packaging, or what a roaster publishes. Ours starts with the last of those.

Why This One Is Ours
This one is ours. It carries no score and no ranking. Instead, it sits apart from the four roasters below.
Start with the cup, because that is why you actually drink coffee. On espresso, it opens with a clean, chocolatey aroma. Milk chocolate and hazelnut lead, with dried fig behind.
The mouthfeel is creamy and round. Through a V60 the same notes carry. However, a brighter citrus accent steps forward.
Stability Blend is 60% coffee from Finca Guadalupe Zaju in Chiapas, Mexico. The other 40% comes from Agri Evolve in Uganda's Rwenzori Mountains. Both are washed and medium roasted.
Here is the thing.
We built this as a clean coffee, and that phrase needs to mean something. It means a cup you can drink daily without wondering what's in it.
I started Balance Coffee after years of working in speciality coffee. Back then, everyone talked about origin and roast profile. However, almost nobody talked about what was actually in the bag.
Coffee is a crop, and crops get sprayed. Beans stored damp can grow mould. Therefore we stopped guessing and had ours tested by an outside lab.
Our testing framework sets out what we check and why.
An outside lab screened our beans and ground coffee in 2026. The screen covered more than 600 pesticide compounds. It also covered mould, mycotoxins and heavy metals.
Every result came in within limits. You can read the full certificate rather than take our word for it. That said, the results apply to the sample tested.
The point is reducing what you take in daily, not clearing anything out. Coffee is a habit, therefore the daily load matters. Certifications describe how a coffee was farmed, whereas a screen looks at the finished bean.
Published purity testing is rare in UK speciality coffee. Most roasters publish sourcing stories, awards or cupping scores instead. Those are worth having, and they answer a different question.

Rounton Coffee roasts in North Yorkshire on Loring convection machines. The company is a member of 1% for the Planet.
We bought one 250g bag of Daybreak, ground for cafetière. Our taste testing team brewed it that way, and the notes below are ours.
The catch?
We have not pulled this blend as espresso ourselves. Rounton sells it in five grinds, espresso among them, and publishes it as an espresso-capable blend.

Origin, Flavour & Taste
Daybreak is a two-origin blend. Half is Guatemalan coffee from La Bolsa. The other half comes from the Rioja Family in Peru.
Rounton holds Great Taste Awards, including two stars for Daybreak in 2024. However, it publishes no outside lab testing for mycotoxins or pesticides. Awards measure taste, in contrast to a laboratory screen measuring contaminants.
In the cup, treacle leads, backed by dark chocolate and a warm earthy base. As a result the body is full and the finish long. Rounton publishes it as dark chocolate, malt and treacle.
Through a cafetière the earthiness softens noticeably. As it does, sweetness moves forward and the chocolate turns rounder. Accordingly it reads as comforting rather than bright.

Rounton shows no review count on the Daybreak product page, so there is no customer rating to report. Instead, the Great Taste record is the only third-party signal available.
Price
Daybreak is the priciest of these Union Coffee alternatives at £4.80 per 100g. However, a subscription drops the bag to £10.80. Accordingly that works out at £4.32 per 100g.

Grind - House Blend
How We Brewed House Blend
Grind is a London coffee company, certified as a B Corp. It sells its coffee into a refillable tin, then posts refill bags to top it up.
We cover the brand at length in our Grind coffee review.
We bought one 227g bag of House, supplied ground. Our notes below come from that bag.
Worth being blunt here.
Grind sells one ground setting, which it calls an omni-grind. It is cut for cafetière, stovetop and filter, not for an espresso machine.
So we have no espresso account to give you for this blend. Anyone pulling shots at home wants the whole bean instead.

Origin, Flavour & Taste
House is a double-origin blend. One half is Da Lagoa in Brazil, and the other is Primavera in Guatemala. Both sit between 1,150 and 1,600 metres.
That is farm-level detail, which few roasters at this price publish. However, Grind's coffee is not always certified organic, and it says why on its own site. It publishes no outside lab screen either.
In the cup, chocolate leads with hazelnut behind it. A subtle citrus note lifts the finish. The body is smooth, carrying depth rather than bitterness.
Grind publishes House as milk chocolate, orange, almond, raisin and plum. Ours is the plainer description of the same cup. The chocolate and the citrus are where both accounts agree.
Customer Feedback
Grind shows no star rating or review count on the product page. It links to Trustpilot instead, which sits away from its own site.
Therefore there is no product-level rating to report here. We would rather say that than borrow a number from elsewhere.

Refills come as a pair of 227g bags from £18.95. At £4.17 per 100g that is about 75p a cup. Union works out three pence cheaper.
Buying bigger changes that. The 1kg bag costs £32.95, or £3.30 per 100g, which is roughly 59p a cup. That is the lowest figure among these Union Coffee alternatives.

One disclosure first. We bought and brewed Original Espresso when it was a three-origin blend. However, Extract has since changed the recipe.
Let us be clear.
Therefore everything below comes from Extract's own published information. That said, the tasting notes are theirs rather than ours.
Extract Coffee Roasters is a B Corp certified roastery in Bristol. It won Best All-Round Specialty Roaster at the 2022 London Coffee Festival. Original Espresso is its long-standing flagship blend.
The current blend uses two origins. One is Minas Gerais in Brazil, naturally processed. Its second origin is Lepaterique in Honduras, fully washed and sun dried.

The Brazilian side uses Catuai, Mundo Novo and Bourbon varietals. The Honduran side uses Lempira and Ihcafé 90. Extract names more varietal detail than most roasters here.
Extract publishes its tasting notes as chocolate cake, butterscotch and praline. Its drinking guide recommends 18g in for 36g out. The suggested shot time is 25 to 30 seconds.
