The Balance Testing Framework
We only score a product once we have bought it, brewed it and logged the results. Every score uses the same criteria. No brand pays to appear. No ranking is influenced by commercial relationships. This page covers how we test beans and ground coffee, how we test pods, and how we test mushroom supplements. Use the links below to jump to the framework that is relevant to you.
Scored Reviews and Evidence-Led Reviews
Every guide says at the top which kind of review it is
Scored review
We bought the product ourselves and brewed it using the protocol on this page. We keep the receipt and the brew log. Only these reviews carry a score out of 100.
Evidence-led review
We have not bought and brewed this product yet, so we do not score it. Tasting notes come from the brand or named retailers, and we say so. We check prices, ingredients, lab results and public reviews instead.
When a review changes type. If we later buy and brew an unscored product, we add a score and update the date.

The Six Scoring Criteria
100 points total · weighted by importance to the reader
Flavour
Tasting notes tested across at least two brew methods per brand. We assess aroma, clarity, complexity, and consistency.
25 / 100 points
Health & purity
We check for mycotoxin, mould, and pesticide screening. Brands that publish independent lab results score highest.
20 / 100 points
Freshness
We check for a printed roast date, batch size, and delivery speed. Brands without a roast date are penalised automatically.
15 / 100 points
Traceability
We assess farm level sourcing detail and supply chain transparency. Named origins and producer relationships score highest.
15 / 100 points
Brand trust
We check verified customer reviews, industry credentials, and the ratio of positive to negative feedback across platforms.
15 / 100 points
Value for money
We calculate price per cup at a standard 18g dose. Score reflects quality delivered relative to cost paid.
10 / 100 points
How ties are broken. Where two coffees finish on the same total, the higher flavour score ranks first. If flavour is level too, health & purity decides. Ranking always follows the heaviest criterion first.

The Six Scoring Criteria
100 points total · weighted by importance to the reader
Flavour accuracy
Does the pod taste like what the brand says it will? We score the match between the stated flavour profile and what lands in the cup.
25 / 100 points
Crema
We assess thickness, colour, and how long the crema holds after pouring. A thin or patchy crema is penalised regardless of the flavour beneath it.
20 / 100 points
Aroma
How strong and interesting does the coffee smell immediately after brewing? We score aroma as a standalone signal of quality, not as a proxy for flavour.
15 / 100 points
Body
How does the coffee feel in the mouth? We assess weight, texture, and smoothness. Thin or watery body scores low regardless of flavour.
15 / 100 points
Finish
What is left in the mouth after swallowing? A clean, sweet, or lingering pleasant finish scores well. Bitterness, dryness, or a chemical aftertaste scores low.
15 / 100 points
Consistency
Do pods two and three taste the same as pod one? We test at least three pods per brand with 90 minutes between each. Pod-to-pod variation is penalised.
10 / 100 points
How ties are broken. Where two pods finish on the same total, the higher flavour accuracy score ranks first. If flavour accuracy is level too, crema decides. Ranking always follows the heaviest criterion first.

Our Editorial Promise
What we commit to on every review we publish
No brand pays to appear
Every scored product earned its place through testing. Products we have not bought and brewed stay unscored and are labelled. No sponsored placements. No paid rankings.
Conflicts of interest are always disclosed
Where Balance Coffee products appear in our guides, they are clearly marked as our own brand throughout.
Affiliate links are always declared upfront
Some links in our guides earn us a small commission. This never influences a ranking or a score.
Every score uses the same framework
The criteria and 100 point scale for each product category are applied consistently to every brand we score.
Ties are broken by a published rule, not by preference
When two products score the same total, the heaviest criterion decides the order, then the second heaviest. The rule is stated in each framework above.
Guides are updated when things change
