I bought Union's Revelation Signature Espresso Blend at full price and brewed it four ways. That is what this Union Coffee review is built on.
I tested it as espresso, as a flat white, through a Hario V60 and in a cafetière. I was looking for how it performs as an everyday espresso bean at home.

Who is scoring this coffee, and why it matters
Balance Coffee is the brand behind this testing framework. I am the founder of Balance Coffee and the lead tester here.
That means a competitor is scoring Union. You should read the score with that in mind.
Every number below is explained. Every fact links to its source so you can check it.
Balance Coffee appears once, near the end. It carries no score here, and it is clearly marked as the author's own brand.
So the number below comes from a rival, and you should treat it that way. The fair test is whether the reasons behind it hold up.
Quick Verdict
Score: 70 out of 100.
Revelation is the only Union bag we bought, so it is the only one scored. Much of what follows applies to Union as a roaster. Its sourcing, its record and its awards all sit below.
Revelation Signature Espresso is a full-strength dark roast. It tastes of caramel, with a warm smell of cinnamon.

Seventy is a solid everyday score on our framework, not a poor one. It reflects a well-made blend that loses points in two places.
Union publishes no independent lab results for mould, mycotoxins or pesticides. The cup itself is dependable rather than complex.
It suits home espresso drinkers who want a bold, traceable everyday blend. Here is what you are actually buying.
Union Revelation at a Glance
Those are the numbers. The story behind them starts in East London.
What Is Union Coffee?
Union Hand-Roasted Coffee is a London coffee roaster founded in 2001 by Jeremy Torz and Steven Macatonia.
The two had run an earlier roasting business called Torz & Macatonia, started in 1994. It merged into Seattle Coffee Company in 1997. Starbucks then bought Seattle Coffee Company in 1998.

Union was set up on its own three years later. It is a different company, not a rebrand of the older one.
What matters more than the history is how Union works today.
Where Is Union Coffee Roasted?
Union roasts at its own roastery on Star Lane in East London.
Union names Loring roasting machines on its own roastery upgrade post. Orders placed on Union's own site are roasted to order, then sent out.
Union's Sourcing and Sustainability Philosophy
Union buys through its own Union Direct Trade programme. The idea is to pay farmers a fair price. Union stays with the same growers for years.

Union's own pages say it works with 40 producer groups across 14 countries.
It also holds ISO 14001 certification for the environment. Union has twice won the Queen's Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development.
Revelation itself holds a Great Taste 2-star award, listed on that same awards page. That is an outside judgement, and this Union Coffee review is not. Weigh one against the other.
Is Union Coffee B Corp Certified?
Yes. Union holds B Corp certification, with a checked score of 106.3 against the 80 needed.
B Corp measures how a company is run. It looks at governance, workers, community and the environment.
It does not measure how the coffee tastes. It is not a purity or mould test. It tells you Union runs a decent business, and nothing about what is in the cup.
How Does Union Coffee Compare With Supermarket Coffee?
Union sits between supermarket reach and speciality standing. That is the clearest way to describe it.
It is a speciality coffee roaster, and Union self-reports an SCA tasting score of 84.5 for Revelation. Anything above 80 on that scale is classed as speciality grade.

That grade is why this doubles as a Union speciality coffee review. The bag is speciality grade but sells like a supermarket brand.
Yet you can also buy Revelation in Tesco and Waitrose. That is unusual for a speciality roaster.
That last column is where our scoring does most of its work. None of it counts unless the testing behind it was fair.
How We Tested Union Coffee
We used the Balance Coffee Testing Framework here. It is the same framework we apply to every coffee we score. Here is how the bag was brewed.

Brewing Methods Used
We brewed Revelation three ways, plus one milk drink. Each method used a different grind, ground fresh immediately before brewing.
Those four settings were fixed before the first bag was opened. Numbers like that are only as good as the person reading the cup.
Who Did the Testing?
I ran every brew and wrote every tasting note in this review myself. I hold an SCA Coffee Skills Diploma, and fourteen years in the trade sit behind that.

The Balance Coffee taste testing team tasted the same cups alongside me. Their notes were used to check my own for agreement.
Where this review says "I", that is my own judgement. Where it says "we", that is the shared method the team followed.
I bought the bag at full retail price from Union's website, and I have the receipt on file. Buying it fairly only matters if the marking is fair too.
Our Scoring Framework Explained
These are the six criteria and what each one is worth. They describe what we measure, not what Union scored.

Health and purity carries 20 points because the screening is expensive to commission. Our own contaminant screen cost us over £400, which is why we weight it heavily.
Any brand can score 20 out of 20 here by publishing the same results. That is the framework; the rest of this Union Coffee review is the cup itself.
Union Revelation Signature Espresso Review
Revelation arrived in a recyclable bag, with the roast date printed on it. The aroma on opening was warm and inviting.
The bag rested for two days before the first extraction. Then I ground it and pulled the first shot.

That first shot came out wrong. The bitterness arrived ahead of the caramel sweetness. That is not what this blend is built to do.
So I opened the grind slightly to ease the extraction. The second shot softened the bitterness, and the caramel and cinnamon aromatics came forward.
Every tasting note below comes from that second setting: 18g in, 36g out, 93°C, 29 seconds. You can match it with our espresso dose and yield calculator.
Bean Origin and Sourcing
Revelation is a blend sourced through Union Direct Trade. The beans come from family farms in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Rwanda and Burundi.
Union names those five countries on the product page. It does not name the individual farms or producers for this blend. For a Union Coffee beans review, that is where the sourcing story stops.
The beans are processed using a mix of honey, pulped and washed methods. That mix is part of why the cup reads rounder and less sharp than a fully washed blend.
What Does Union Revelation Taste Like?
These are my notes from the cups I brewed. Your palate and your machine will shift the detail. Treat this part as a Union espresso blend review first, and a filter one second.
The dry grounds smelled warm and spiced, with a cinnamon-like fragrance. That aroma filled the room during brewing and carried into the first sip.

As espresso, the cup was caramel-forward with a rich, coating body. The finish was long and sweet.
Once dialled in, bitterness was present and controlled throughout. It never turned harsh or ashy, which is the usual failing of a dark roast at this strength.
With steamed oat milk, the caramel held up rather than disappearing. This is a blend built to survive milk.
Through the V60 it read brighter and lighter than the espresso. Union's own filter notes call for dark chocolate and gentle cherry, and our cups were consistent with that.
Union's own tasting notes call for chocolate and treacle. Our panel read the same cup as more spiced than chocolatey. That is a difference of palate, not a correction.
Roast Level
Revelation is a well-controlled dark roast. It has real caramelisation and body without tipping into carbon-forward bitterness.
Recommended Brew Method
Revelation performs best as espresso, or on a bean-to-cup machine. It also works as a cafetière brew if you want a heavier, traditional cup.
Through a V60 it is pleasant but less distinctive. Espresso is where this blend is designed to sit.

What I Like
- Bitterness stays controlled once dialled in, never ashy or harsh
- Full, rounded body that holds its character under oat milk
- The bag arrived freshly roasted, with the roast date printed on it
- Traceable to five named origin countries through Union Direct Trade
- Works as espresso and as cafetière coffee, not just one of the two
Most of those came from the cups rather than from Union's own copy. The list of complaints is shorter, but it is not empty.
What I Don't Like
- No published independent lab results for mould, mycotoxins or pesticides
- Farms and producers are not named for this blend, only the five countries
- It is speciality-grade, but not an especially complex or standout cup
None of those three are dealbreakers on their own. What decides it for most people is what the bag costs to drink.
How Much Does Union Coffee Cost Per Cup?
Price is where this Union Coffee review gets most of its questions. Revelation costs £7.95 for a 200g bag and £32.95 for 1kg on Union's own product page.

At an 18g espresso dose, a 200g bag makes about 11 shots. That works out at roughly £0.72 a shot.
The 1kg bag makes about 55 shots at the same dose. That brings it down to roughly £0.59 a shot.
That is a premium over supermarket own-brand coffee. For speciality-grade beans, it is a fair price.
Customer Feedback
Union collects customer reviews on two platforms, and the picture differs between them. Both are worth reading before you buy.
On Feefo, Union holds 4.8 out of 5 for service and 4.7 out of 5 for product. Those come from 6,618 reviews, checked on 14 September 2026. Union also carries a Feefo Platinum Service Award badge.

On Trustpilot, Union holds 4.2 out of 5 from 63 reviews. That is a much smaller sample and a lower rating.
Page one of the Trustpilot profile is not uniformly positive. It carries a strongly negative review and a separate non-delivery complaint.
Delivery reliability is the recurring theme in the negative feedback. Coffee quality and freshness are what the positive reviews return to.
Verdict and Score
A number on its own is not much use. Here is what sits behind each one.
Flavour, 18 out of 25. Once I had the grind right, this blend behaved. Every shot after that came out the same, which is harder than it sounds.
What it never did was surprise me. There is no moment in the cup where something unexpected arrives. That is a fair trade for an everyday espresso, and Union clearly built it that way.
Health and purity, 10 out of 20. Half the points here depend on published, dated lab results. Union has none, so it gets half.
Nothing in that says the coffee is contaminated. It says nobody outside Union has checked and published.

Freshness, 11 out of 15. Where you buy decides this one. Order from Union directly and the coffee is roasted for your order.
The date is printed on the bag, and mine arrived fresh. That puts Union among the roasters that date every bag.
Pick the same bag up in a supermarket and none of that applies. Union publishes no batch size either, so I cannot tell you how small the roasts are.
Traceability, 11 out of 15. Union tells you a lot, then stops one step short.
Union Direct Trade is real and the five origin countries are named. The producer relationships run for years.
What you cannot find is which farms grew the beans in this bag. For a blend sold on its sourcing, that gap matters.
Brand trust, 13 out of 15. Union has the paperwork, and all of it checks out. Every credential named above counts here, from B Corp to the Feefo award.
This Union Coffee review holds back two points for the review split covered earlier. Feefo only invites buyers, while Trustpilot is open to anyone and runs lower.

Value for money, 7 out of 10. At roughly £0.59 a shot from the 1kg bag, Revelation is priced fairly for what it is. You are paying speciality money and getting speciality coffee.
What you are not getting at that price is any published purity data. That is the whole of the deduction.
That is Revelation, tested and scored. Union sells a good deal more than this one bag.
The Rest of the Union Coffee Range
I only bought and tested Revelation, so nothing else here is scored. This section just lists what else exists.
Union's current range covers blends and single origins. The blends include the House Roast Original Blend, a Decaf Blend and the Natural Spirit Organic Blend.

Single origins include Maraba from Rwanda, plus seasonal small lots and gift packs.
Union does not sell pods or capsules of any kind. Its range is built entirely around whole-bean and ground coffee. The one thing it sells beyond the bag is a plan to keep it coming.
Union Coffee Subscription Plans
I have not subscribed to Union, so treat this as a Union Coffee subscription review on paper. What follows is factual only, with no score and no claims from experience.
What Union Offers
Union launched its subscription in 2015. It currently offers two plans.

Subscribe & Save delivers the same coffee on a recurring schedule, at 10% off. Union's own subscription page states that you subscribe to the same coffees each order and save 10%.
Discovery is the exploration tier. The Union team picks two different 200g bags for you to try each delivery.
Bean and Ground Options
Both plans let you choose your grind. The options are whole beans, or ground for cafetière, filter or espresso.
Delivery Frequency and Flexibility
You can set delivery to weekly, fortnightly, monthly or every six weeks.
You can skip a delivery, bring one forward if you run out, or cancel at any time.
Is the Union Subscription Better Than a One-Time Purchase?
It depends on how much coffee you drink. The saving is 10%, applied to whichever coffee you choose.
On a 1kg bag that is £3.29 off, taking £32.95 down to £29.66. On a 200g bag it is 79p.

The stronger argument is convenience rather than price. You also get the Discovery tier and an onboarding quiz. Neither is available on a single purchase.
Without a subscription of my own, I cannot speak to dispatch reliability or cancellation in practice. What I can settle is whether the coffee itself earns the money.
Is Union Coffee Worth It?
For most home espresso drinkers, yes. The cup, the credentials and the price all hold up.
The case against it is narrow. This Union Coffee review found three gaps, and only one of them is about the cup.
Whether those gaps matter depends on you. Any Review of Union Coffee has to end by saying who the bag is for.
Who Should Buy Union Revelation?
Buy Revelation if you want a reliable dark roast that behaves well in milk. It is a strong everyday espresso bean.
It suits you if you like warm, caramel flavours rather than sharp ones.

It also suits you if you care where the beans come from. You can restock the same bag in a supermarket. Not everyone is served this well by it.
Who Should Look Elsewhere?
Skip Revelation if you want bright, single-origin character. This blend is built to taste the same every time.
Skip it if you use a pod machine. Union sells no pods or capsules at all.
Skip it if you want published lab data on purity. Several UK roasters publish that data, and we have reviewed them separately. If Revelation is still your bag, the next question is where to get it.
Where to Buy Union Coffee
You can buy Union direct or through retailers. The main difference between them is freshness.

Union's Website
Union's own site carries the full range and the freshest roast dates. It is also the only place the subscription is available.
Third-Party Stockists
Revelation and other Union products are sold at Tesco, Ocado, Waitrose and Amazon. Harvey Nichols also stocks the range.
Supermarket bags may have older roast dates than direct orders, since they sit in a distribution chain first. Union does not publish stock rotation data either way.
That is everything on Union. Since I have been the one scoring it, you are owed a plain account of what I sell.
Union Coffee Alternative (Balance Coffee)
Balance Coffee is my own brand. I founded it, I sell its coffee, and it is not scored anywhere on this page.
I am setting my own brand beside Union so you can compare them. The choice is yours.
Balance Coffee was founded on a toxin-free principle. Our Stability Blend is traceable to named growing regions in Brazil, Mexico and Uganda.

Our beans and ground coffee are independently lab-tested by P.H. s.r.l., part of the TÜV SÜD Group. The 2026 results covered five test categories, including a screen of more than 600 pesticide compounds.
All results came back within limits, and we publish the certificates with their dates. Those results apply to the specific sample tested, which was our beans and ground coffee. Union publishes no equivalent results.
That is the single clearest factual difference between the two brands. It is also the criterion Union loses most points on in this Union Coffee review.
On price, here is the same basis for both. A 1kg bag on subscription, compared per 100g.
Union is the cheaper coffee per gram. That is worth saying plainly, since I sell the more expensive one.
Stability Blend is £14.99 for a 250g bag, or £12.74 on subscription. Every order is covered by a 60-day money-back guarantee.
That is the full case, mine and Union's, set side by side. A few questions come up often enough to answer directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Union Coffee good quality?
Yes. Union is a speciality-grade roaster with verified credentials. Revelation scored 70 out of 100 on our framework. It holds a Great Taste 2-star award, and Union self-reports an SCA tasting score of 84.5. The cup is dependable rather than complex, which is what the flavour score reflects.
Where does Union Coffee source its beans?
Union buys through its own Union Direct Trade programme. It works with 40 producer groups across 14 countries. Revelation is blended from beans grown in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Rwanda and Burundi. Union names those countries on the product page, but not the farms behind the blend.
Is Union Coffee ethically sourced?
Yes. Union Direct Trade is built on paying farmers a fair price. Union keeps the same producer partners over many years. Union also holds ISO 14001 environmental certification. It has twice won the Queen's Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development. Its B Corp score is 106.3, against 80 required.
Does Union Coffee offer a subscription?
Yes, two plans. Subscribe & Save delivers your chosen coffee on a schedule you set, at 10% off. Discovery is a two-bag plan where Union picks the coffees for you. Both plans run weekly, fortnightly, monthly or every six weeks, and you can skip or cancel whenever.
Does Union Coffee sell pods or capsules?
No. Union's range is limited to whole beans and ground coffee, in several bag sizes. There are no Nespresso-compatible pods and no capsules of any kind on sale. If you brew with a pod machine, Union is not a brand you can buy from at all.
Is Union Revelation a dark roast?
Yes, and a well-controlled one. It has a warm, cinnamon-like aroma and a caramel-forward flavour with a long, sweet finish. Bitterness is present but stays controlled, never turning ashy. It holds its character under steamed milk, which is why it works in a flat white.
Those are the questions I get asked most about this bag. What follows is the short version of everything above.
Conclusion
Revelation Signature Espresso Blend scored 70 out of 100 in this Union Coffee review.
It is a well-made everyday dark roast. It works as espresso, in milk and in a cafetière. It also carries a Great Taste 2-star award.
Two things hold it back. Union publishes no independent test results. The cup is reliable rather than exciting.
Buy it if you want a steady dark roast you can restock in a supermarket. Look elsewhere if you want single-origin character, pods, or published lab data.
