Origin Coffee is genuinely good coffee with delicious flavours and premium quality.
It tastes fresh, the quality stays consistent, and you can tell they care about where their beans come from.
I’m James Bellis, founder, barista, and coffee trainer. For over 14+ years, I’ve worked with more than 100 roasters across the UK, brewing coffee for over 199,000 people. I also hold an SCA Coffee Skills Diploma, which reflects my love for clean coffee.
In this Origin Coffee Review, the brand scored 89/100, which, in my opinion, is pretty good (and my testing criteria were pretty strict; more on this later).
It’s an amazing option if you want speciality-grade, freshly roasted coffee beans delivered to your doorstep.
What Is Origin Coffee?
I heard about Origin Coffee when I first started testing speciality coffee during my professional barista journey.
And chances are, you’ve heard tales about their speciality coffee from fellow coffee lovers, too.

And let me tell you, their bean quality is the reason for that.
Origin has built a solid reputation over the years for sourcing high-quality beans.
It all started with Tom Sobey’s trip to Australia in 2004.
He was so impressed by their coffee culture that he decided to bring it to the UK too.
So, he launched the UK's now one of the most respected independent speciality roasters.
At the time, speciality coffee wasn't as common as it is today.
Most people only knew about generic commercial blends.
So, Origin coffee came in with a different approach.
They provided better beans and a much bigger focus on flavour clarity.
Even today, Origins coffee roasts its beans in Cornwall.
Their Roast-to-Order system provides you with fresh products.
As I always say, nothing beats freshness in coffee.
Origin Coffee's Sourcing and Sustainability Philosophy
If you ask me, a good coffee should also come with a good background.
Something that gives you satisfaction with your brand choice.
This is where I think Origin stands out the most.
They focus on direct trade relationships and seasonal sourcing.
Have you noticed that many brands throw around words like “ethical” without properly explaining what they mean?
What I like about Origin Coffee is that it gives you detailed information about their farms, too.
Compared to mainstream brands, Origin is way more transparent.
And Origin Coffee is B Corp certified, too.
Yeah, I know, another fancy term.
Basically, it just means they run their business in a fair, ethical, and environmentally friendly manner.
How We Tested Origin Coffee
By now, you probably know how seriously I take these reviews.
I didn't just try one quick cup before writing a review of Origin Coffee.

I have built a complete system to conduct reliable coffee testing.
I use a structured Balance Coffee Testing Framework to keep things consistent and fair.
And then I coordinated this entire Origin Coffee review with my testing team to ensure there is no bias.
We scored Origin Coffee based on factors that are important to you.
Like, flavour, freshness, sourcing transparency, health and purity standards, brand trust, and overall value for money.
For pods, we also looked at crema, body, aroma, finish, and consistency between capsules.
You’ll get a better idea from the tables at the end of each product review.

My team and I worked hard testing origin coffee beans, pods, and subscription services for you.
And I put together this Origin speciality coffee review so you know if Origin coffee products are actually worth your time.
Origin Coffee Beans Reviews
One of the reasons I decided to do an Origin Coffee brand review is that I kept seeing it everywhere.
Coffee shops, home baristas, and even on Reddit threads.
Before pods or anything else, I wanted to do an Origin Coffee beans review first.
You know that beans are where you go when you want to test the core flavours and product quality
Origin Resolute Espresso
I’m sure Resolute espresso is the one you have in mind when we think about Origin.
It is their flagship product and one of the best espresso coffee beans out there.

And honestly, after testing it properly, I can see why.
This blend feels very balanced and incredibly easy to drink every day.
For espresso, I brewed it through the Sage Barista Pro using an 18g dose, 36g yield, and 93°C water.
Extraction averaged around 29 seconds across testing.
For the secondary brew, I used a Hario V60 with 15g of coffee to 250ml of water at 92°C.
I started with a 30ml bloom, held for 35 seconds, then completed the pour. Grinding was done fresh each time, immediately before brewing.
The aroma felt like warm caramel and milk chocolate.
The espresso had thick crema and a very creamy texture.
In the first sip, I got caramel sweetness with fruit notes towards the end.
Throughout this whole Origin Coffee Resolute blend review, I got a nice stable flavour across multiple sessions.
Consistent flavour is something I really appreciate in a good coffee.
What I Like
-
Smooth and balanced flavour
-
Good crema and texture
-
Good for espresso and milk drinks
What I Don’t Like
-
It is a bit more expensive than commercial brands
-
Limited flavour profile
Bean Origin & Sourcing
Resolute coffee is sourced from South and Central America, and this blend varies with seasonal availability.

Flavour Profile & Tasting Notes
The tasting notes for this are milk chocolate, caramel, soft stone fruit, and roasted nuts.
In the first sip, you get to taste milk chocolate first.
It had a very smooth, caramel-like sweetness.
I noticed hints of stone fruit notes towards the end.
Nothing was too sharp or acidic.
And towards the end, there was a hint of roasted nut that really tied everything together.
Roast Level
It is a nice medium-dark roast that is perfect for everyday brew.
Price & Value for Money
This blend will cost you £9.40 for a 250g bag

Origin Stronghold Espresso
Stronghold is opposite to Resolute.
Just like its name suggests, it comes across as bolder and stronger.

Honestly, this is the kind of coffee that gives you that classic Italian-style espresso feel.
Straight away, the aroma gave chocolate and brown sugar notes.
I noticed a sweet, fudgy, and dark chocolate flavour with a hint of roasted nuts in the background
It feels like a very traditional Italian-style espresso
but without the bitter or burnt taste
It also works really well with milk drinks.
Its strong, bold chocolate-forward flavour stayed strong even after adding milk.
After reviewing so many coffees lately, the good ones become really easy to spot.
What I Like
-
Rich chocolate flavour
-
Low acidity and balanced finish
-
Excellent for milk drinks
-
Very smooth espresso profile
What I Don’t Like
-
Less fruity complexity
-
Slightly heavy for lighter coffee drinkers
Bean Origin & Sourcing
They source their beans from Brazil in the Serra de São Domingos and Sul de Minas regions.
These are produced by the Barbosa and Bachião families.

Flavour Profile & Tasting Notes
I was instantly hit with dark chocolate flavours.
It has a rich, sweet fudge-ness that makes the cup feel slightly fuller.
There was a slight hint of brown sugar flavour underneath everything.
It has the right amount of brown sugar flavour to make espresso feel bold and traditional.
The low acidity is actually what pulled everything together for me in this cup.
It is bold and quite balanced
And that balance is probably why this blend works so well as an everyday espresso.
Roast Level
It is a medium-dark roast.
Price & Value for Money
It costs around £9.40 for a 250g bag.

Origin Coffee Pods Review
If I am being honest, most compostable pods always disappoint me a little.
Either the flavour feels like instant coffee or the body turns watery halfway through the cup.
So, when I started testing these coffee pods for the Origin Coffee review. A part of me expected the same thing.
But surprisingly, they felt much closer to proper speciality coffee than most compostable pods I’ve ever tested.
Honestly, Origin handled pods better than I expected.
This Origin Coffee pods review surprised me quite a bit.
Origin House Espresso Pods
If there is one origin coffee pod you would keep coming back to.
It's this one. The House Espresso Pods are Origin Coffee's flagship pods.

These pods will give you that rich cafe coffee feel without the need to go out to an actual cafe.
It delivers a smooth, always-on-point espresso, whether you are half-awake in the morning or making a quick flat white before work.
I tested them using the De’Longhi Creatista Plus and Breville Creatista Plus machines over multiple mornings.
Each pod was brewed three separate times with 90-minute gaps between sessions.
I also used Brita-filtered water throughout testing.
And just to be clear, these worked perfectly in the Original Line machines, but not in Vertuo Pop.
One thing that I always promise you.
Nobody pays to appear in these reviews.
So every pod in this Origin Coffee review is scored using the exact same testing framework, whether it’s Balance Coffee or anyone else.
What I Like
-
It has a very creamy body
-
Excellent for milk drinks
-
Consistent across multiple brews
What I Didn’t Like
-
Not compatible with Vertuo machines
-
Slightly premium pricing
Flavour Profile & Tasting Notes
The main tasting notes I got were dark chocolate, fudge, and brown sugar
When I pulled it as an espresso, the first thing I noticed was that smooth chocolate hit.
The slight brown-sugar sweetness was present, with a subtle nuttiness in the finish.
All flavours combined round up nicely.
When I switched to lungo, the chocolate softened, and the sweetness came out more evenly.
With milk, it turned into a proper chocolatey latte.
Just smooth and balanced.
Roast Level
This is a medium-dark roast.
The roast level suits espresso-based drinks really well.
Compatibility
These pods work with Nespresso® Original Line machines.
They’re not compatible with Vertuo, so double-check your machine before ordering.
I tested them on both the De'Longhi and the Breville, and they fit perfectly.
Price & Value for Money
It costs around £6.95 for 10 pods, so you're paying about £0.70 per pod.
But if you go for the 100-pod option, you save 20%, bringing it closer to £0.56 per pod for speciality coffee.

Origin Decaf Pods
The Decaf pods are for those of you who love a good night's sleep but not before a nice little nightcap.
You know that moment when you want something warm and comforting after dinner.

But also don’t want your brain running laps around the ceiling at 2 am.
That is exactly where these fit.
I tested the Atlas Blend pods using both the De’Longhi Creatista Plus and Breville Creatista Plus.
Each pod was brewed three times with 90-minute gaps between sessions.
I tested espresso and lungo settings using Brita-filtered water throughout.
I wasn't sure whether to include the decaf pods in my Origin Coffee Review.
Because most Decaf pods usually fall a little flat.
But these proved me wrong.
What I Like
-
Smooth and comforting flavour
-
Excellent evening coffee option
-
Works well with milk
What I Don't Like
-
Slightly lighter body
-

Flavour Profile & Tasting Notes
It has the tasting notes of Apple, Chocolate, and Caramel
As an espresso, it felt smooth and mellow.
Nothing too heavy or filling.

The crema was perfectly golden
Chocolate came through first.
There was a soft apple with caramel sweetness near the finish.
You would feel very calm on the palate.
As a lungo, it was very creamy and just the right amount of sweet
It actually tasted much more balanced than most decaf pods I’ve tried.
Roast Level
It has a medium roast.
This roast level works well with decaf drinks
Compatibility
Just like House Espresso pods, Decaf capsules also work with Nespresso® Original Line machines.
But they’re not compatible with Vertuo machines.
Price & Value for Money
They cost around £6.95 for 10 pods. If you get their subscription, you can get 10 per cent off every order.

Is Origin Coffee Worth It?
You want my honest opinion?
Yes. It is worth it if you care about freshness and sourcing.

It’s actually one of the best coffee beans you can buy online.
I think Origin Coffee really shines in having strong sourcing transparency.
They are giving you a consistent flavour quality, which I think is a major thing.
And my favourite part is that their pods are better than most competitors
But even then, there are some downsides too.
They don't have any health-focused products.
So it's not for those who are more health-conscious.
And some products are very speciality-focused, which is an acquired taste.
So some casual drinkers may not enjoy it immediately.
Who Should Buy Origin Coffee?
If you’re still here in this Origin Coffee review, you probably have an idea of whether it's for you or not.
Let me still help you with the decision.

You will probably enjoy Origin if:
-
You enjoy speciality coffee
-
You brew at home regularly
-
You care about sourcing
-
You want fresher beans
You can buy directly through Origin’s website.
They also offer an Origin Coffee subscription service.
Honestly, I think buying directly from the roaster gives you fresher coffee.
Now, if you relate to any of these points:
-
You prefer health-oriented products
-
You only want an affordable option
-
You prefer very dark, smoky roasts
Then Origin is not for you.
But fret not, you can easily explore other speciality coffee options.
Origin Coffee Alternative (Balance Coffee)
Now, obviously, I have to disclose this clearly.
As you guys know, Balance Coffee is my own brand.

But you guys also know Balance performed extremely strongly under the same testing framework we used for Origin Coffee review.
Especially when it comes to flavour, freshness, and clean sourcing.
We focus heavily on transparency, mould testing, and speciality-grade beans.
If you are someone who specifically values clean, organic coffee, proper, transparent mould testing, and organic products.
Then, without a doubt, Balance Coffee is the perfect fit for you.

I believe Balance Coffee would be best.
But in the end, it all comes down to what matters most to you guys.
