Exhale Coffee Review (Beans, Pods, Subscription) Reading Best Exhale Coffee Alternatives UK 2026 (Tested & Scored) 15 minutes Next Best Mushroom Coffee UK 2026: 10 Brands Tested & Scored

Exhale Coffee alternatives keep coming up whenever readers ask about healthy, organic beans in the UK. Fair enough.

It's earned that. So I bought Exhale's House Roast myself and put it up against four other UK roasters.

Five specialty coffee packs in a bright premium lifestyle setting, with Balance Coffee featured most prominently.

Same equipment, same brew methods, every single cup.

Here are 5 genuine Exhale Coffee alternatives UK buyers can actually order today.

What Is Exhale Coffee?

Exhale Coffee is a UK organic speciality roaster. Alex Higham and Kirsty Miller founded it in 2020, roasting in small batches out of a London base.

Soil Association organic certification. B Corp status too. It sells three single-origin roasts, all 100% Arabica, in whole bean or ground format.

Exhale House Roast, Dark(ish) Roast and Decaf coffees in three distinct premium lifestyle settings.

Each roast has its own farm. House Roast comes from Inza, Cauca, in Colombia. Dark(ish) Roast is grown at La Prosperidad de Chirinos, in Peru's Cajamarca region. Decaf traces back to the Capitán and Majomut Cooperatives in Chiapas, Mexico.

Why Look for an Exhale Coffee Alternative?

Exhale has real strengths. Trustpilot shows over 8,000 reviews, averaging 5 stars overall. Reviewers consistently praise the taste and the lack of jitters. Still, a handful of genuine gaps show up against other UK organic roasters.

Certificates aren't published per batch. Exhale runs 9 independent lab tests per shipment, covering pesticides, mould, yeasts, mycotoxins, and heavy metals. It says certificates are available on request. What isn't standard practice: publishing an independent lab report for every batch, the way Balance Coffee does.

Exhale Organic Darkish Roast coffee pack in a moody premium lifestyle setting with a cup of coffee.

The free trial converts automatically into a paid subscription. 21 days, then the first paid bag ships, per Exhale's own site. A reminder goes out 3 days before conversion. But a recurring theme in Exhale's own Trustpilot reviews is confusion over how clearly that gets flagged.

Pricing sits at a premium. £20.00 for a 450g bag, one-time. By Exhale's own stated 30 cups per bag, that works out to £0.67 a cup.

This article is written and published by James Bellis. We scored these four Exhale Coffee competitors using our own published methodology.

Judge that on the evidence, not the fact that we scored them. Every score is reused from our own published UK coffee bean testing, across two prior guides.

Where Balance Coffee Fits In

Before anything else: this is Balance Coffee's own product, on our own site. It sits outside the scored comparison above. That doesn't mean the facts below get a pass, though.

Stability Blend brings together Mexican and Ugandan beans in a medium roast. Milk chocolate. Hazelnut. A hint of dried fig.

Anyone can claim a clean cup. Fewer brands can show the paperwork behind it.

Balance Coffee Stability Blend pack in a bright premium lifestyle setting with a clean modern coffee scene.

P.H. s.r.l. and TÜV SÜD ran independent lab testing on every batch, most recently in November 2024. Pesticides, aflatoxins, OTA, mould, yeast, and heavy metals all came back clear.

Exhale's credentials stop at Soil Association organic status, plus lab testing it says happens on every shipment. Publishing each batch's certificate for anyone to check isn't standard, though.

Our approach is simpler: put the certificate and the lab result next to each other. That's exactly how our testing framework works. Nothing left to take on faith.

No. 01

1. Origin Coffee - Resolute

75 / 100

How We Tested Resolute

Cornwall's Origin Coffee has roasted since 2004. Resolute is its core espresso blend, built from young producer groups in Colombia and Peru.

Sage Bambino. 18g dose, 33g yield, worked out using our espresso dose and yield calculator. Extraction landed between 29 and 32 seconds, in line with Origin's recommended parameters for this blend.

Origin Coffee Resolute pack in a bright premium café setting with espresso and clean modern styling.

Beans arrived 2 to 4 days post-roast. A secondary AeroPress round checked how the blend held up outside espresso, including as a latte base.

Note: this session and its 75/100 score are drawn from our "Best Coffee Beans UK 2026" testing. A separate, dedicated Origin Coffee review we published used a Sage Barista Pro at a 36g yield. That was a different session, with its own tasting notes.

What I Like

  • Voted Europe's best speciality coffee roaster in 2023 and 2024
  • Rotates sourcing by season, each origin paid well above Fairtrade minimums
  • B Corp certified

What I Don't Like

  • No published independent lab results for mycotoxins or pesticides
  • Blend composition shifts seasonally, so there's no fixed single-origin traceability
  • Frequently sells out with little warning

Origin, Flavour & Taste

Resolute rotates its sourcing by season. When Origin's own testing scored this blend, it paired the Jovenes Matambo cooperative in Colombia's Huila region.

Smallholders around Jaen and San Ignacio in Peru made up the rest. That season, Origin paid £3.89 per lb FOB, the price paid at export, well above Fairtrade minimums.

The current release draws from Nicaragua and Brazil instead. Check the live product page for what's actually in today's bag.

Origin Coffee Resolute pack in a warm upscale espresso bar setting with elegant coffee styling.

B Corp status confirms ethical business practice, not what's actually in the roasted bean. That gap is why the health score sits below Balance Coffee's.

Stone fruit opens the espresso. Then caramel sweetness, then a milk-chocolate finish. Creamy body, no harsh edge anywhere.

As a latte base, that same stone-fruit and chocolate character cuts cleanly through steamed milk. The AeroPress lightens the body and pulls the caramel note further forward.

Customer Feedback

Origin holds a 4-star Trustpilot rating from over 170 reviews. Buyers most often mention consistent quality and how easy the beans are to dial in at home.

2. Volcano Coffee Works - Mount Blend

74 / 100

How We Tested the Mount Blend

Brixton's Volcano Coffee Works has roasted in small batches since 2010. Mount Blend pulls together beans from Brazil, El Salvador, and Colombia.

Sage Barista Express. 93°C, 18g dose, 36g target yield.

27 seconds on day 7 post-roast. We checked it across three separate 4-hour windows.

Volcano Coffee Works Mount Blend pack in a premium urban café setting with warm coffee styling.

For filter, an Aeropress carried 17g of coffee against 220ml of water at 89°C. Three rounds of testing held the result steady.

Sweet, smooth aroma on opening. Milk chocolate led, a hint of caramel warmth trailing behind it.

What I Like

  • Low acidity, silky mouthfeel, easy to brew well
  • Roast date printed on every bag

What I Don't Like

  • No published independent lab results for mycotoxins or pesticides
  • Traceability sits at country level only, not farm level

Origin, Flavour & Taste

Three countries feed into Mount Blend, though only at country level. Farm names aren't part of what Volcano publishes.

Like Origin, Volcano has no lab results for mycotoxins or pesticides. Its health score rests on sourcing values, not tested proof.

Volcano Coffee Works Mount Blend in a sunlit botanical lifestyle setting with coffee and red grapes.

Silky, low-acid espresso. Milk chocolate and caramel lead, a red grape note trailing behind.

Immersion brewing on the Aeropress pushes the chocolate and caramel deeper still. The finish stays just as smooth and clean. Read our full Volcano Coffee Works review for the complete brand testing.

Customer Feedback

Volcano holds a 5-star Trustpilot rating from over 850 reviews. Flavour and freshness are what reviewers mention most, alongside the Mount Blend specifically as a favourite.

3. Rave Coffee - Signature Blend

73 / 100

How We Tested the Signature Blend

Rob and Vikki Hodge founded Rave Coffee in the Cotswolds back in 2011. Signature Blend carries an SCA score in the 82 to 84% range.

Sage Barista Express. 93°C, 18g in, 36g target out, the same machine used for every brand here.

27 seconds. Day 3 post-roast, four sessions across 12 hours.

Rave Coffee Signature Blend pack in a bright countryside lifestyle setting with elegant coffee styling.

Filter testing used a Hario V60, 15g of coffee against 250ml of water at 92°C. Three sessions confirmed the result.

Warm, welcoming aroma on opening. Toasted caramel with a light almond edge.

This is a blend that plays it safe rather than chasing drama.

What I Like

  • Roasted to order, with roast date printed on the bag
  • SCA score of 82 to 84% confirms speciality grade
  • Most competitively priced entry in this group, £7.95 a bag

What I Don't Like

  • No published independent lab results for mycotoxins or pesticides
  • No organic certification, unlike Exhale

Origin, Flavour & Taste

Signature Blend is a curated medium roast. Rave shares its SCA scores openly but stops short of farm-level detail for this one.

No organic label. No lab testing for contaminants either. Set against Exhale, that's a genuine shortfall.

Rave Coffee Signature Blend pack on a modern living room table with warm lighting and minimal styling.

Caramel opens the espresso, almond following through the middle, bitterness never really showing up.

Filter brewing softens the caramel and lets a nutty sweetness take over. This suits drinkers after consistency more than excitement. See our Rave Coffee review for the full brand breakdown.

Customer Feedback

Rave holds a 4.8-star rating from over 5,800 reviews. Consistency and freshness on delivery come up more than anything else. Reviewers also praise the lack of the sharp acidity found in mainstream brands.

4. Rounton Coffee - Daybreak Blend

72 / 100

How We Tested the Daybreak Blend

North Yorkshire's Rounton Coffee, founded in 2013, has picked up multiple Great Taste Awards. Daybreak blends Guatemala with Peru.

Sage Barista Express. 93°C, 18g dose, targeting a 36g yield.

28 seconds. Day 3 post-roast, four sessions over 12 hours.

Rounton Coffee Daybreak Blend pack in a snowy premium winter setting with elegant coffee styling.

Filter testing ran through an Aeropress, 17g of coffee to 230ml of water at 91°C. Three sessions verified the result.

  • Full body with natural sweetness and no harsh aftertaste
  • Consistent performance across espresso and Aeropress

What I Don't Like

  • No published independent lab results for mycotoxins or pesticides
  • No organic certification, unlike Exhale

Origin, Flavour & Taste

Guatemala and Peru make up Daybreak, though only country-level sourcing is shared publicly.

Panel-judged Great Taste Awards speak to flavour, not to what's screened out of the bean. Contaminant testing sits outside their scope entirely.

Rounton Coffee Daybreak Blend pack in an outdoor sunrise setting with warm morning light and elegant coffee styling.

Dark chocolate opens the espresso, treacle sweetness building through the middle. Fuller body than most medium roasts manage.

Aeropress brewing softens the chocolate and lets a mild earthiness through, the finish coming out just as clean.

Customer Feedback

Rounton holds a 4.96-star rating from over 440 reviews. Depth of flavour comes up more than anything else. The Daybreak Blend specifically gets called out as a favourite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Now, let's answer some of your questions, shall we?

What are the best Exhale Coffee alternatives?

Balance Coffee, Origin, Volcano Coffee Works, Rave, and Rounton all offer a genuine alternative to Exhale Coffee. Balance Coffee is often the strongest fit, being the only one publishing a lab certificate for every batch. For taste-first buyers, Origin is worth considering as the best alternative to Exhale Coffee. It scores highest on flavour, 22/25.

Is Exhale Coffee worth it?

Exhale is a legitimate organic, B Corp-certified UK roaster with three single-origin roasts. It tests every shipment at an independent lab, though it doesn't publish a per-batch certificate. Its free trial converts automatically into a paid subscription after 21 days. A 450g bag costs £20.00, or £0.67 a cup by Exhale's own count.

What is the cheapest alternative to Exhale Coffee?

Of the four alternatives compared here, Rave Coffee has the lowest price at £7.95 for 250g. That is about 57p a cup, genuinely undercutting Exhale's own 67p. Volcano Coffee Works follows at £9.50 for 200g, working out to about 79p a cup, more than Exhale.

Is there a UK alternative to Exhale Coffee with published lab results?

Yes. Balance Coffee is the only brand here publishing an independent lab certificate for every batch. That test costs over £400, per Balance Coffee's own account in its "Best Coffee Beans UK 2026" testing. Exhale lab tests every shipment too, but doesn't publish individual batch certificates. Origin, Volcano, Rave, and Rounton rely on certifications or awards instead.

Conclusion

Every one of these alternatives to Exhale Coffee earned its place through real testing, not just brand recognition.

If you want proof over promises, Balance Coffee's Stability Blend is built for exactly that.
